In 2008 Maureen Walkinshaw sat across from me
and refused to accept anything less than my best.
She made me write my resume five times.
And by the fifth time — it was drastically different.
It was drastically different because in the process
she was teaching me about my identity. She gave me a voice,
confidence in myself, and value for my work.
She made me think I could do anything.
Thirty days later I had a career opportunity that changed my life.
Twenty years later I am still talking about her.
And now an entire generation will know her name.
This book is her legacy continuing.
Passed from Maureen to Daisy.
Passed from Daisy to them.
"Rome was not built in a day.
But it was built by people who showed up every day
and did the work."
— Grandma DeeDee, 2005
"The job market will pressure you. Employers will tempt you.
Financial stress will rush you. Fear will tell you to take
whatever is available right now.
In those moments — come back to who you are."
— Daisy Rice
